H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine recall for infant shots
Dec 15, 2009
An H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine recall has been issued for infant shots. 800,000 H1N1 swine flu vaccine shots have been voluntarily recalled for the possibility that it may not be potent enough, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported Tuesday.
Sanofi-Aventis is the maker of the low-dose, thimerosal-free vaccine which was intended for infants between 6 and 35 months old. Most of the vaccine was released a month ago, and it is assumed that it has already been used, but doctors that may have supplies left have been alerted of the recall.
Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said the vaccine was fully potent when it was released, but dropped by about 12% in follow-up tests.
Dr. Schuchat said, “We think children who got the vaccine are fully protected, assuming they got the two shots we recommend for that age.” “We don’t think parents need to contact their doctors".
The Sanofi-Aventis infant vaccine is the only thimerosal-free version licensed for young children, with the exception of the nasal spray which contains a live swine flu virus. Pregnant women are not advised to receive the live virus.
